Circus Journal

Ideas + commissioning + copy editing + news and feature writing

I was the editor of south-west print magazine, Circus Journal. The idea was to redefine local press and champion real journalism and design.

Highlights

I'm proud of what Circus became; a keepsake full of interesting tales and fascinating folk from the south-west; a region I grew up in, and adore.

Having worked in online news and features for many years, the opportunity to go back to pure print was so enticing. The smell of the ink, the crisp, matt paper, and the magic of each issue landing. It was total joy to make something analogue and, I hope, meaningful. Some highlights include:

+ Meeting quiltmakers, unicycle riders, blacksmiths, allotmenteers, bookbinders, ceramicists and muralists
+ Championing local shops, food and drink producers, kids' clothes designers and other small businesses
+ Shouting about all the amazing community projects there are in the west
+ Peter Lord on the power of imagination
+ Getting in the ring with a Giffords Circus performer
+ Big chats with the folk behind The Long Table
+ Visits to Hauser & Wirth, Kin House, Atlanta Trevone and many more...
+ Spending nights in treehouses, space crafts and woodland cabins...
+ LOLs with radio husband Shaun Keaveny
+ 20 questions for Mr Bingo
+ The Modern House on what makes a home
+ Interviews with Yotam Ottolenghi and Grayson Perry
+ Behind-the-scenes at Mr Noodle
+ Curators on their favourite art in the west
+ Booksellers on joyful reads
+ 48 hours in Lyme Regis, Totnes, Watchet, Nailsworth and Clevedon
